Preparing for a calm newborn photography session

A practical packing list, feeding guidance and an honest explanation of how a baby-led studio session unfolds.

The short version

Feed your baby shortly before arriving or plan to feed comfortably in the studio. Dress them in something loose and easy to remove. Bring more milk, nappies and spare clothing than you think you will need — then leave the posing, wraps and pace to us.

Your packing list

  • usual feeding supplies and an extra feed;
  • nappies, wipes and disposal bags;
  • a dummy if your baby already uses one;
  • spare clothes for baby and adults;
  • one or two small sentimental items;
  • anything you routinely need for prescribed care.

Sleep is helpful, not a test

The 7–14 day window often makes curled, sleepy poses easier, but no baby is expected to sleep on command. Awake portraits, wrapped images and close family photographs can be just as meaningful. We follow feeding and comfort cues rather than trying to defeat them.

Parents and siblings

Tell us sibling ages before the day. Family photographs are usually planned early enough to avoid asking a young child to wait through the full newborn session. Keep adult clothing simple and coordinated, and bring a clean snack or quiet activity for waiting time.

During the session

Feeding, winding, cuddling and changing are part of the schedule. The studio is kept warm and surfaces and washable items are prepared between families. No pose is forced, and complex-looking photographs may be created as supported composites.
