Cake smash preparation without the stress

How to choose a theme, prepare your baby for unfamiliar textures, handle allergies and pack for the wonderfully messy bit.

Book backwards from when you need the images

If the photographs are for invitations or party décor, allow time for set planning, the session, your gallery selection and final editing. Three to four weeks is the minimum planning window; earlier is kinder to everyone.

Practise the texture

Some babies dislike icing simply because it is unfamiliar. In the weeks before the session, try supervised messy play with safe soft foods such as yoghurt or mashed fruit. Let your baby explore with hands and a spoon without directing them to perform.

Allergy information is essential

Tell the studio about every known or suspected allergy before a cake is discussed. A standard cake can be arranged where suitable, while bespoke or allergy-aware recipes may be quoted separately. Bringing a known-safe cake can sometimes be the right choice.

What to bring

  • nappies, wipes and a towel;
  • spare clothes for baby and adults;
  • water and familiar clean snacks;
  • any agreed portrait outfit;
  • one small comfort or sentimental item.

A simple theme photographs best

Choose a colour palette or one clear idea. An uncluttered set leaves space for your child's face, hands and reactions — which are the parts you will care about later.
