What to wear for relaxed family photographs

An easy colour-and-texture guide for families who want to look coordinated without dressing identically.

Coordinate; do not copy

Begin with two or three tones that already exist in your wardrobes. Neutrals, soft earthy colours and gentle textures combine easily. Everyone wearing the same white shirt can feel more like a uniform than a family.

Start with the hardest person to dress

Choose the baby's special outfit, a maternity gown or one adult's favourite piece first. Build everyone else around it rather than buying several unrelated outfits and hoping they meet in the middle.

Avoid unnecessary distractions

Large logos, cartoon graphics, fluorescent colours and very fine stripes pull attention from faces. Empty pockets, remove hair bands from wrists and check that underwear works with each neckline before leaving home.

Comfort changes expression

Children photograph better when they can move, sit and cuddle comfortably. Bring a backup outfit for babies and toddlers, and do not introduce stiff shoes or itchy clothes for the first time at the session.
